ictor Emmanuel in Mint State: What a Six-Figure Risorgimento Coin Actually Tells You

Two NGC-certified lots, one Turin sale, and the conditions that make this category worth serious attention

The portrait has not aged. Victor Emmanuel II looks out from the obverse with the same blunt authority he carried in life, and the fields around him, on this particular 1864 Turin Mint 50 Lire, still catch the light the way they did the day the coin left the press. That is not sentiment. That is the MS 61 grade talking, and it carries a €100,000 starting bid at Aste Bolaffi's Auction 39, held over two days in May 2021.

The standard view of numismatic assets at this price point is that you are buying history. A Risorgimento relic, a Savoy portrait, a moment in amber. That reading is not wrong, but it is incomplete. What the Bolaffi sale actually offered, when you look at the structure of the lots, was something rarer and more useful: a calibration point.

Two Lots, One Session, One Reference Frame

Alongside the 1864T BN 50 Lire sat a companion piece, an 1860B 20 Lire graded NGC MS 63. Its starting bid was €60,000. In a category where mint-state survivors surface infrequently and rarely in the same room, the pairing matters. A collector or adviser trying to understand relative value across denominations and grades in Risorgimento gold does not often get two certified examples in a single session. The 1860B MS 63 is not a footnote to the 1864T MS 61; it is a second data point in a dataset that has very few entries. Read together, the two starting bids sketch the rough shape of where this market sits.

Bolaffi is Italy's most established auction house for this category. That matters not for ceremonial reasons but because liquidity in Risorgimento-era gold is thin by definition. When a credible venue surfaces material of this quality, the window is real. It is also infrequent.

What the Certification Is Actually Doing

For a buyer acquiring remotely, the NGC slab is not a convenience. It is the mechanism that makes the transaction possible at all. Authentication burden shifts. Cross-border price comparison becomes tractable because the grade is a shared language, recognised in Geneva, New York, and Singapore as readily as in Turin. The coin's physical condition is no longer a matter of negotiation between parties with unequal access to the object. That structural function is more durable than any figure attached to a starting bid, and it is why third-party certification at this price point is not optional.

The 1864T BN 50 Lire at MS 61 and the 1860B 20 Lire at MS 63 both carry that protection. For a buyer who cannot be in the room, that is the foundation of the holding.

A Category for Conviction

Nothing about this is a trade. Liquidity is low by design, the holding horizon is long by necessity, and the market for mint-state Risorgimento gold is narrow enough that timing an exit is not a reliable plan. What the Bolaffi sale offered was something more modest and more honest: a moment of price discovery in a category where such moments are scarce.

Victor Emmanuel built a kingdom from fragmented states. The coins that bore his face in mint condition have survived 160 years of attrition. The collector who holds one next is buying scarcity that no mint will ever replenish.
